Teaching Approach
Having 15+ years of teaching experience, Dr. Tan’s students come from a variety of backgrounds: from age 4 beginners to advanced college music majors. Dr. Tan’s musical training, while focused on piano, stems from a music education, vocal, and composition background. One of his strengths as a teacher is the ability to connect with a diverse range of students. For this reason, there is a deep care for the process of learning—which means tailoring a curriculum to students’ unique learning modalities. Part of this holistic process includes making meaningful connections between music lessons and students’ everyday lives. Dr. Tan works best with intermediate and advanced-level students, although all promising students are considered for the studio. As an academic professional, he stays up to date on the latest trends, technologies, and teaching methods, so that his students are afforded as many opportunities as possible. He also has a research interest in new music and expanding the realm of traditional piano (extended) techniques.
Dr. Tan has limited studio availability at this time and will only consider serious and dedicated students. This includes individuals who demonstrate a commitment to regular practicing, active participation in all studio events, and a high level of self-motivation. Please keep this in mind when reaching out for an initial contact.
